ISTD Stamps Brief
Research and explore how postage stamps are used to communicate today. The outcomes for this project are to design a set of stamps and another typographic response to support it.

I chose to approach my theme of Whistleblowers by showing the struggle to reveal the truth by weaving the themes through black bars. The images are in black and white to represent the darkness of forces wanting to hide the truth. The white circle of light represents the ‘shining a light’ on the truth by the whistleblowers who fought doggedly for years at great personal expense for the greater good.
I choose to support the stamp designs as a newspaper supplement because the topic was and is news at that time. We’ve had the PAC hearings and the Garda Ombudsman potential bugging. The topic is still today very current.

I decided to go with a feature supplement of an imaginary Irish newspaper. The reason is because the subject is quite serious and the stories have a lot of meat to them so they would be best served in long format. Any one of the stories would work as an article in a newspaper but together they make make up a good eight page supplement. The stories cover a wide range of Irish life over many years and are very interesting personal stories so would serve perfectly as a feature section in a newspaper.
